Inside The Oakland Raiders
On a day in which it was learned Tom Cable had his first substantive discussions with owner Al Davis regarding being the Raiders head coach in 2009, some of the assistant coaching staff is on the move in advance of the expiration of their contracts on Jan. 13.

A move in the works for nearly a year has come to fruition according to the NFL Network, with Adam Schefter reporting Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Knapp will be offensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks under Jim Mora.
INSTANT RAIDERS
Rod Woodson, to no one’s surprise, is among the 15 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2009.
If Woodson were somehow a borderline candidate, I’d fill this space arguing his credentials for the Hall. Fortunately, that’s not necessary. He’s a 100-percent-guaranteed lock for first-ballot enshrinement. The short version: Woodson was a deadly kick returner early in his career, and good enough at cornerback to make the NFL’s elite 75th anniversary team (along with Night Train Lane, Mel Blount and Mike Haynes). In terms of game speed, he was about as fast as anyone in the league.
Then Woodson suffered a devastating knee injury in 1995. It would have signaled the end of a career for most speed-position players. Woodson, after trying to stick at corner for a couple seasons, simply moved to safety and became one of the game’s best during stints with the 49ers, Ravens and Raiders.

So who will sit at the front of the classroom and help JaMarcus Russell’s development?
It won’t be Greg Knapp, who per Adam Schefter of the NFL Network, has made the long expected move to Seattle to join Jim Mora’s staff as offensive coordinator.
Raiders Blog and Q&A
If the Raiders are going to spend a lot of money in free agency, wide receiver shouldn’t be the top priority.
The Raiders spent big on Javon Walker last year. Veterans Drew Carter and Ashley Lelie were also added. Lelie signed after Carter was lost for the season because of a knee injury.
But circumstance forced the Raiders to turn to its young receivers.

Raiders owner Al Davis is pretty quick to fire a head coach. Just ask the past four Raiders head coaches, none of whom reached a third season. Because every yin needs a yang, Davis takes his careful time finding a replacement head coach. Just ask the past…

While many a hometown fan enjoys the schadenfreude-heavy firing of an overwhelmed, incompetent and/or just plain wrong man for the head coaching job, a far greater highlight of the NFL offseason is the buildup to the hire.
As with so many other processes in which this front office is involved, the coaching situation in Oakland is murky; speculation goes unanswered and, oh, boy, is there much to …

Final HOF list includes two from AFC West
Posted by ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson
The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced its 17 finalists for enshrinement in 2009. The vote will be Jan. 31. Two players who spent a significant part of their careers in the AFC West are among the finalists while four players from the division didn’t make the final cut.
Here are the finalists:
Shannon Sharpe, tight end: 1990-99, 2002-03 Denver Broncos; 2000-01 Baltimore Ravens
Will he get in? He is considered one of the best players ever to play his position but because there is a logjam at other positions and tight end is not considered a glamor position by many voters, Sharpe may have to wait a year or two.
Derrick Thomas, linebacker: 1989-99 Kansas City Chiefs
Will he get in? It says here he gets in either in 2009 or 2010.
Here is a list of semifinalists who spent most of their careers in the AFC West but did not make the cut to the finalists list:

The Raiders might not have a great relationship with the national media but ESPN’s Chris Mortensen was way out of line with his comments that the team had lost its privilege to have him run stories by them for comment. Even ESPN felt so and pushed Mortensen to issue a follow-up comment.
