If nothing else, the Raiders have managed to end some embarrassing losing streaks over the past one and three-quarter seasons.

Lane Kiffin’s lone full season saw the Raiders end a road losing streak at 12 games when they beat the Miami Dolphins in Week 2.

By Adam Gretz

While doing my daily rounds through cyberspace yesterday morning, I stumbled across a stat on the fantasy sports site, Rotoworld, that I found just a little hard to believe. Apparently, the Oakland Raiders have scored only one touchdown in the first half of their games this season. One.

That was quite a showing by the Raiders' wide receivers on Sunday. Ronald Curry caught a hitch pass four yards behind the line of scrimmage and quickly sneaked a lateral to halfback Darren McFadden to complete a hook-and-ladder play.

The Raiders are headed toward the last quarter turn in need of a finishing kick if they hope to enter the 2009 offseason feeling as if they accomplished anything but another lost season.

By Jason Jones

ALAMEDA - What should a quarterback say to his receiver should he sail a ball over his head and he takes a hard hit from a defender.

Raiders wide receiver coach James Lofton had a suggestion.

"Suck it up," Lofton yelled as he overheard JaMarcus Russell being asked a question along those lines.

After Sunday's loss to Kansas City, Raiders tight end Zach Miller said Chiefs All-Pro tight end Tony Gonzalez advised him to tell Russell not to throw passes that set him up to take big hits.

He said he never intends for his teammates to take some of the hits they took against the Chiefs.

"That's football," Russell said when asked about receivers getting hit. "You're going to get hit anyway so you might as well hold on to it."

Russell does admire that he has receivers willing to take big hits for a catch.

Russell said he's willing to do the same for them.

"I'm not going to sit up there and not get hit," he said. "I stand there and take a shot in the mouth and throw the football. I make sacrifices for my teammates just the way those guys do for us."

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- When interim coach Tom Cable watched the film from the Oakland Raiders' latest loss, there was one play that was particularly hard to relive.

It was the botched fake field goal that turned three points for Oakland into seven for Kansas City during a 20-13 loss on Sunday that assured the Raiders of their sixth straight losing season.

Sunday's game was one of those that's hard to swallow. It's one of those games where everyone goes out there and put it all on the line and you come up short. You have to just try and put that loss behind you and just try to get ready for next. We have a very short week because we play thursday this week so its quick turn around. you really don't have time to sit around and think about the loss since u have to get ready in just a few days.

Though few positives may be had for Oakland Raiders fans after Sunday’s 20-13 loss to the AFC West rival Kansas City Chiefs, at least loyalists can take solace in that stale play-calling certainly wasn’t to blame for the loss.

It didn't take long before Tom Cable's Monday press conference turned to the fake field goal that got comical for the Raiders on Sunday. At one point I asked him whether, having reviewed the film, he believes Sebastian Janikowski had a chance to run for the first down if he had fielded Shane Lechler's pitch cleanly.

No team in the NFL has completed fewer passes this season than the Oakland Raiders, and frankly, it's not even close. That's probably not all that shocking to you, seeing as how JaMarcus Russell is a second-year quarterback, and the Raiders are, for the most part, a running team blessed with a deep backfield including Justin Fargas, Darren McFadden and Michael Bush. Naturally, like any team, they're going to stick with their strength.

By David White

Raiders punt returner Johnnie Lee Higgins was named the AFC special teams player of the week Wednesday. He'd just the same share with the 10 blockers who made his 89-yard touchdown possible Sunday at Denver.

There was Michael Huff clearing the edge with a downfield block, when it would have been so easy to clip the guy instead. Sam Williams and Hiram Eugene cleared the aisle on the sideline. Jon Alston provided the helmet-free escort in the red zone with Marquis Cooper not far behind.

in other words, Higgins didn't score the second- and third-longest punt returns in franchise history on his own the past two games. All those non-starters who fans hardly recognize are making Higgins' job so easy in a season where nothing has come easy to the Raiders.

"They do the hard work," Higgins said.

Higgins has clearly punched himself together more time in the NFL. Little-used at receiver and not very good as a kick returner, punt returns should be his meal ticket for at least another season.

If he could develop as a route runner, he could become a poor man's version of Tim Brown -- the team's last punt returner to win the weekly special teams honor.

In other news of the day ...

** Sunday's game against the visiting Chiefs is a sellout, making the Raiders 5 for 6 in that department this season.

For the team to sellout a game featuring a 3-8 home team and 1-10 visitor, someone deserves an early Christmas bonus.

Tight end Zach Miller missed practice with a sore groin, which is more than enough information on that. It's amazing the block-first, catch-second player isn't more beat up after 11 games.

Raiders coach Tom Cable doesn't expect Miller to miss Sunday's game.

** Tuesday's paper included a story about how the Raiders are daring to dream playoffs. They're only 3-8, but the the 6-5 Broncos aren't exactly running away with it.

Gerard Warren will have to pay for his participation in Oakland's upset win at Denver on Sunday.

Still, he will likely write the check with a smile on his face. A win over the Broncos is always sweet for Oakland. It is particularly sweet for Warren, whom Denver traded to Oakland in 2007.

Warren was fined $5,000 for a late hit on Denver quarterback Jay Cutler. Denver was also penalized on the play. Oakland linebacker Thomas Howard was not fined despite being penalized for two late hits on Cutler.

It's amazing what a blowout win over your arch-rival can do for your morale and outlook on the season. On Sunday, the Raiders marched into Denver and absolutely crushed the division-leading Broncos, in what was perhaps their most complete game of the year. The win improved the Raiders to 3-8 on the season, three games behind Denver in the AFC West.

Next week, a game between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders will be broadcast live in 3-D to theaters in Los Angeles, New York and Boston. It is a preliminary step on what is likely a long road to any regular 3-D broadcasts of football games.

As I went through the stat lines from all the box scores from last weekend's NFL action, this one stood out above all the others:

JaMarcus Russell: 10-11, 152 yards, 1 touchdown, 0 interceptions

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Johnnie Lee Higgins' early-season struggles as a returner reached a peak last month when he fielded a kickoff and ran straight out of bounds at his own 2-yard line.

The past two weeks have shown Higgins at his best. He has returned punts 93 and 89 yards for touchdowns -- the two longest punt returns in the NFL this season -- giving a big boost to an Oakland Raiders offense that has struggled to score points.
