After losing safety Hiram Eugene to a season-ending hip injury in the preseason opener, the Raiders have picked up a couple of safeties to replace him.
Last year, linebacker Travis Goethel was on track to win a starting job as a sixth-round rookie, until a back injury caused him to miss half of the regular season.
The Raiders satisfied their legendary need for speed once again Monday, taking Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor in the third round of the NFL’s supplemental draft.
Arrested in February for Operating While Intoxicated, Raiders running back Michael Bush said Thursday that charges against him have been dropped. “It’s a relief,” Bush told CSNCalifornia. “I just want it out there.” An official from Clark County would not confirm exactly what happened in Bush’s but it’s possible Bush took a lesser charge as a first-time offender, typically public intoxication.
Lito Sheppard is heading to Oakland. The Raiders announced today that they’ve signed Sheppard, a nine-year veteran cornerback, and he’ll be on the practice field in Napa today.
Defensive tackle John Henderson missed his fifth straight day Wednesday and linebacker Rolando McClain his second, both with undisclosed injuries. … Tight end Brandon Myers left practice with a foot injury, but coach Hue Jackson didn’t think it was serious. … Rookie tight end David Ausberry has been out three days with an undisclosed injury but said he “should play” Sunday night against the Saints.
The three players who stood out the most were running back Taiwan Jones (made like the Roadrunner on one swing pass), defensive end Trevor Scott (very active) and cornerback Jeremy Ware (good deep coverage).
On Jones: “What do you think of his speed? Oh my gosh can he run. He can go. I’m very excited. We have a lot of skill. We have guys who can do a lot of different things. It’s my job along with Al Saunders and the offensive coaching staff to create something for these guys where they can all showcase their talents and abilities. … He’s a lot tougher than people think he is. I think he got some extreme talent. But again that’s out here on the practice field; he just needs to do it in a game. “He’s faaaaast, man. God can this guy run. He’s extremely fast but he’s very … he’s very nimble and he’s very smooth. I don’t think sometimes you know he’s running that fast. For a guy that’s built like he is he’s very physical. There’s a lot of velocity behind the man when he runs into a pile.”
On Scott: “Wow. Wow. Playing. He’s going to play some, he needs to. But what a tremendous competitor. What a tremendous football player. Those guys that have been away that have now come back to practice, they’ve elevated practice because they’re tremendous football players. The Jacoby Fords, the Darren McFaddens, the Taiwan Jones, the Trevor Scotts … Those are good football players. They have a say in how this thing is all going to go down so I’m excited about our football team. We need to put the practice performance to the game. These preseason games, they don’t count, we all understand that, but they do matter. It matters about where we’re going as a football team. It’s been a process and we’re just going to keep working this process as we go forward.”
On Ware: “I see a guy who’s competing. Our defense did a good job today of really concentrating and playing defensive football all the way around, the secondary through the front seven. I thought today he competed because I paid a lot of attention to the defense today and those guys did a good job.”
