Show Notes:
Former Wyandotte Bulldogs star athlete and Oakland Raiders cornerback Alonzo “Skip” Thomas played on one of the best secondaries in NFL history. This week, teammates from that secondary spoke out about the love they have for their departed teammate.”Everything came naturally for him,” said former Raiders cornerback Willie Brown. “He wasn’t the hardest working guy but he knew what it took to get the job done. You could count on him as a guy who would challenge receivers, no matter who he lined up against.” Brown, Thomas, Jack Tatum and George Atkinson formed “The Soul Patrol,” a secondary known for hard-hitting and for its toughness. Atkinson and Brown are the two surviving members now, as Tatum passed away last year.“He enjoyed playing football and he loved playing for the Raiders,” Atkinson said. “That was his thing. I’m glad he did. I’ll have fond memories of him.”Along with playing football, Thomas was a star on two Wyandotte Bulldogs state championship teams in the late 1960s. He later player college football at the University of Southern California. “The Soul Patrol” was one of the biggest keys in the Raiders winning the Super Bowl in January 1977.”You could count on him as a guy who would challenge receivers, no matter who he lined up against,” Brown said. “He had a `Come on, bring it on,’ attitude’ and he would rise to any occasion.’
